The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) (act 4 of 2013) governs the manner in which we may collect, store, and distribute the data we have obtained from Club members in their membership application, whether in paper form or via the Gantouw Hiking Club website. Compliance with the Act requires us to afford our members their Constitutional right to privacy.

The committee takes reasonable steps to store members’ personal information securely. This information is accessible only to committee members and, in a more limited form, to hike leaders for the purposes of fulfilling their functions in the Club. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Sending members information on club matters, club activities, and other hiking-related topics.
  • Communicating with members on matters related to their membership of the club.
  • Providing hike leaders with the information necessary for organising hikes and other club activities.
  • In case of an emergency, communicating with a member’s emergency contact.

Members’ private information is never disseminated to any third parties.

Member information stored in our member database will be permanently deleted upon non-renewal of membership.

You have the right to request a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or to request that this information be updated or deleted. To do so, please direct a request to gantouwhiking@gmail.com.
